  • What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation related to your teeth, gums, or mouth that requires immediate professional attention to alleviate severe pain, reduce the risk of infection, or prevent long-term damage. These emergencies can arise from accidents, infections, and other underlying health issues. Recognizing what constitutes a dental emergency can help you take swift action and potentially save a tooth or avoid serious health complications.

  • What’s the best way to handle a dental emergency?

If you encounter a dental emergency, it’s crucial to contact your dentist right away. However, if the situation is severe or occurs outside of regular office hours, you should visit the closest emergency room. Depending on the nature of the dental emergency, there are a few things you can do to alleviate pain and improve the situation. These include dissolving a teaspoon of salt in warm water and using it as a mouthwash, flossing to relieve gum pressure, applying a cold compress to the affected area, rinsing with diluted Hydrogen Peroxide to eliminate bacteria, and taking over-the-counter pain medication to alleviate pain.

  • What should I do if I have a knocked out tooth?

It’s important to handle a lost tooth carefully to avoid damaging it. Avoid touching the roots or top of the tooth and only handle it by the sides and chewing surface. To clean the tooth, gently rinse it with water or milk. Do not rub, scrub, dry off, or use soaps or chemicals to clean it.

If possible, try to put the tooth back in the socket, handling it only by the sides and bottom. Gently bite down to keep it in place, making sure it’s oriented properly and not backward. Don’t force it if it won’t fit properly.

If you can’t put the tooth back in the socket, keep it moist by soaking it in a glass of milk. If you don’t have milk, you can hold the tooth between your gums and cheek, but don’t do this with young children who could swallow the tooth. Don’t use tap water to soak the tooth because it could damage the roots. If you don’t have milk and can’t hold the tooth in your mouth, spitting into a container and soaking the tooth in saliva is the next best option.

It’s important to call the dentist as soon as possible. The sooner you can see a dentist, the better the chances are of reattaching the tooth. It’s possible to reattach a tooth an hour or more after it has been knocked out, but the sooner you can see a dentist, the better.
