No matter how friendly a dentist in Arvada, CO is or how gentle their staff is, even a simple tooth cleaning can be difficult to schedule for many. If you’re feeling apprehensive about visiting a dental professional, sedation dentistry may be right for you.
How Sedation Dentistry Works
While sometimes called sleep dentistry, sedation dentistry doesn’t actually put you to sleep. Unless you’re under general anesthesia, the idea is to make the patient more relaxed. There are different levels of this, ranging from minimal to deep. Your dentist can work with you to determine not only the right dose for you, but also the best way to administer the sedative.
There are two main types of sedation dentistry available at Winter Family Dental: IV or oral. Please note that whichever version you choose, you’ll also receive the numbing services that are standard during any typical procedure.
An IV will typically mean moderate sedation, meaning it’s good for those who have high anxiety at the dentist. The advantage of receiving the sedative through your veins is that it both allows the drug to work faster and gives the dentist an easy way to adjust how much sedative you’re receiving.
Oral sedation works by giving you a pill that will help you relax. While you may feel drowsy during the procedure though, you may not actually fall asleep. If for any reason you do drift off, it shouldn’t take more than a gentle shake to wake you. Oral sedation is the most common form of sedation dentistry because it’s effective and easy to take.
Who Is Right for Sedation Dentistry
Not everyone will need sedation dentistry. We recommend it though for anyone with a low pain threshold, sensitive gag reflex, or serious anxiety at the dentist. Even those having a large amount of dental work done may benefit from sedation.
It is far worse to delay necessary treatments than it is to get a helping hand during them. Going without restorative procedures or standard cleanings can lead to serious health issues, including infection and teeth loss.
